Matter of timing: Humidity is valuable for the lungs, especially in dry climates, but to my knowledge, does not prevent infections. Nor does eucalyptus oil. Some doctors recommend saline gargles and nasal saline rinses 1-2 times daily to protect against influenza, but even there, not well studied or proven. But if there is active lung infection, steam inhalation (avoid burns!), should improve symptoms.

Humidifier: Nasal saline rinses, treat fever with Tylenol rather than Motrin. Rest, drink fluids and humidification may provide relief. Watch for signs of distress and then seek acute care.
