Wash hands: The appropriate answer is "all of the above". When C. diff exits the body it becomes inactive and develops a protective coating that protects it from air, heat, etc. (spore). The spore will reactivate when it is ingested and reaches the intestine. The key to its survival is the environment and the amount of cleaning that occurs. A solution of one part bleach/9 parts water will kill it. Wash hands!
