Analogy: The nervous system is like a big river where the brain represents the ocean/spinal cord the main river/the nerves the smaller rivers & creeks & nerve endings the smallest inputs. All skin surfaces have nerve endings. Some have more like fingertips or lips while others have less. Fibers are a different name for smaller nerves.

ANATOMY LESSON: On the skin are receptors for light touch, pressure, pain, position, vibration, temperature, running proximally on sensory nerves to pass upwards in the spinal cord tracts to reach brainstem and brain nuclei, where the peripheral sensations are interpreted and appropriate responses are sent peripherally, all in a period of milliseconds. Well, that's it in a nutshell!
