Lumbar radiculopathy: Herniation of the l4-5 disc may impinge or "pinch" the exiting nerve roots of l5, the traversing nerve roots of s1 & occasionally the L4 nerve root if it is a far lateral disc herniation. These nerves travel from the spine to the lower leg, feet & as far as the toes. This explains why an l4-5 disc herniation may be accompanied by symptoms such pain, numbness, & pins & needles sensation in the feet.
