A member asked:

I am non diabetic with a herniated l4 l5. lately an acute sciatica episode has resolved within 4 weeks, and the only symptom that lingers is numbness in upper side of left foot, is that normal?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not normal: Lumbar disc herniation in the setting of neurologic deficit, especially weakness in the lower extremities, warrants evaluation by a neurosurgeon. In the setting of residual foot numbness, evaluation by a neurosurgeon for a complete neurological examination to rule out any other neurological deficit, with an MRI beforehand, may be of benefit.
