No: An article in the past few years from the British Medical Journal reviewed 30 years of data on back surgery and found it effective only 5% of the time providing lasting relief. Furthermore is no weakness or foot drop surgery not indicated. Vast, vast majority of discs resolve in 6 weeks. NSAID and back exercises or physical therapy.
