Treatment for herniated intervertebral discs become especially urgent when muscle weakness develops. At this time you have severe pain for which a neurosurgeon may end up recommending referral to a pain management specialist as well as physical therapy. If this fails, surgery may then be recommended. Will your physician prescribe more potent pain relievers until you're seen by the neurosurgeon?
