First decide if need: X-rays are not always helpful. X-rays need to be ordered by a doctor. They are not completely risk free (small amount of radiation) and they need to be interpreted in light of the clinical situation. By seeing a doctor (primary care, pediatrics, urgent care, sports medicine, orthopedics), you may get an answer after a history & physical. If X-rays or other tests are needed, the doctor will order.

Not recommended: Depending on where you live and local regulations you may not be able to get such a test without a doctor’s order. The easiest would be to have his pediatrician coordinate the test, so that formal follow up will be in place depending on results.
