Sex and UTI: Sex is a common trigger of urinary tract infection (UTI) in some women, due primarily to colonization of the vaginal area with UTI causing bacteria that originate in the GI tract, e.g. E. coli and similar. Sex can massage the bacteria into the urethra. Taking a dose or two of antibiotic before or following sex sometimes is effective prevention. Discuss w/ your doctor or an ID specialist.
