Dental Restorations: Drilling into the tooth and into the dentin irritates nerve fibers that are located in the dentin tubules. Most patients have no issues with the procedure, but a few may have prolonged sensitivity (thus the term atypical). If the pain has lasted for a while and is not subsiding, then the filling can be removed and the dentin painted with dental varnish. The varnish seals the tubules.
