My 5 year old son has chronic allergies according to his dr and said he can take claritin ot zyrtec. is one preferred over the other? main symptoms are runny nose and post nasal drip cough?

Allergies: The medications both work very well in children. Use the liquid or chewable dosing as this is easier for them than swallowing a pill. Claritin has been around longer, and has been shown to be non drowsy. Zyrtec may cause some drowsiness. You may have to cycle between them over the years to maintain effectiveness (3-4months on each)

Allergies: Allergies can be so vexing. Your son's physician is trying to lessen his symptoms to allow him better quality of life. All medicines, however, have side effects, in this case drowsiness and lethargy. Have you considered seeing a specialist Allergist to try to treat the cause, not just the symptoms?
