A member asked:

A couple weeks ago my husband starting having a pain in the front of his ribs, top left side. progressively over the past 3 weeks the pain has gotten worse and has now wrapped around to his back. he has been taking 800mg ibuprofen for the past week to help with any inflammation, but it has not helped. the pain is so intense it hurts him to breathe, but he says it's not in his lungs, it's his ribs. what sort of doctor do we need to see? is there anything they can do? intense rib pain?

GP: Or primary care doc first for an exam and detailed history. While the pain is suggesting musculoskeletal in character, its duration and lack of response to ibuprofen make other causes likely. An exam should help clarify and tests may be needed.

Agree with Dr. P: A couple of weeks is too long to live with the pain. It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor. Wish you and your husband good health!
