Personal preference: Colonoscopy preps are intended to cause large volumes of fluids and bowel material to pass through quickly, thus cleaning out the intestines. Tablet forms are easier to take since it is just a set of pills and glasses of water. Solutions like Mag Citrate are typically more difficult to take because of the taste, acidity and volume ingested. Both systems do the same thing.

Can use either: In a 2017 retrospective chart review in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, both bisacodyl (Dulcolax) and magnesium citrate (Citrate of Magnesia) showed similar adequate bowel preparation scores (97% vs 98%) although bisacodyl did better than magnesium citrate in achieving an excellent bowel preparation score (84% vs 67%). Bisacodyl resulted in less nausea, but more abdominal cramping.
