Good Question: I wish there was a simple answer, unfortunately, that is not always the case. The extent of how "dilated"the ventricles get and length of time of hydrocephalus, as well as age, may make it more likely that the ventricles will never return to "normal" size. (Perhaps its better said they'll adjust to a new normal if the shunt is working). Comparing films and "symptoms" is often best.
