What is the surgery for crainiosynistosis like?

Very specialized: Skilled surgeons separate the skull bones that fused together too early. The surgeons treat the edges of the skull bones so that they don't fuse together until later, to allow the patient's head to grow symmetrically in the way a normal skull sould grow. In order to get to the skull bones, the surgeons lifted back the scalp. At the end of the surgery, the scalp is flipped back over the bones.

Depends on approach: The procedure varies with the location of the defect and training & preference of the surgeon. An open approach peals back scalp, separates the fused area & treats the edges so they don't knit up again too soon. The scalp is repositioned & closed. Some surgeons do a closed approach thru an endoscope tube inserted under the scalp. The bleeding & recovery time seem less if the closed approach is posibl.

Common & significant: Craniosynostosis surgery is among the more commonly performed pediatric neurosurgical procedures. Depending of the age of the child, there is a growing trend toward endoscopic repair of craniosynostosis. Endoscopic repair is less invasive, has a lower incidence of transfusion, and a smaller scar. However, it is often difficult to get as complete a cosmetic repair endoscopically.
