Common: Group A Streptococci bacteria is the most common kind of bacterial infection that results in tonsillitis in babies. The bacteria is spread by coming into contact with people who are already infected with this virus and is acquired by coming in contact with mucus or by touching infected areas of their skin. It is a very common infection and easily treated with oral antibiotics.

Not generally: Tonsils are not generally enlarged at this age.Babies can certainly get throat infections, but most commonly, they are viral, not strep. We don’t see strep commonly under 1 year of age.The exception to this is occasionally when a baby is in daycare or sometimes if a sibling has it. Then the treatment is with antibiotics.Otherwise it is to increase fluids and use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain.
