A member asked:

When does most of the viral shedding occur? right before, during or after a cold sore?

HSV shedding: With recurrent herpes -- either oral or genital -- viral shedding is maximum starting a day or two before the outbreak starts and continues for 2-5 days. Shedding declines as the outbreak starts to heal, but some shedding is present unitl healing is complete. Intermitting shedding also occurs in absence of symptoms, between outbreaks.
