A member asked:

Hi all, i recently went to my dr for regular check-up, nurse came in to check my blood sugar with brand new lancet prick. concerned as she was not wearing gloves. this happened in usa. 2 weeks out developed armpit rash. should i be with hiv hep risk?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Same daily risk: In that kind of situation, the gloves are mainly to protect the nurse, because the patient is not at risk for things like blood-transmissible infections, because lancets and needles are new and nurses use alcohol which cleans the skin. That means the risk of catching a disease like HIV or Hepatitis is unchanged from our baseline everyday risk of those infections from living in this modern world.
