In my 40s. ua has intermittently shown 2-5 or 5-10 rbc when not on cycle. no stones. never had gross hematuria. no infection. no stones. normal kidney functioning.urologist recommend cystoscopy. what could cause this intermittently for years?

See below: You have experienced an intermittent microscopic hematuria. If you have had an isolated hematuria ( without proteinuria), benign familial hematuria, hypercalciuria, and Alport syndrome are top on the list of possible causes. I would recommend to get a referral to a nephrologist to find out definite diagnosis in a timely manner.
