A member asked:

If a child is experiencing precocious puberty symptoms due to a rare hypothalamic tumor such as a craniopharyngioma but no seizures nor any neurologic symptoms, will she still need to have an eeg done as a precaution? thanks?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maybe/not: Seizures complexes on EEG can sometimes exist but not last long enough to produce any symptoms. An EEG might be part of a pre-op workup based on the treating docs past experiences but may not. Tumors by themselves often produce no seizure activities. Any surgical procedures on brain tissue might eventually create a seizure focus but these could be assessed if/when they arose.
