Is it normal for a 63-year-old woman to suddenly have arthritis in several joints? hip replaced, now in the knee and both thumbs.

Yes: Arthritis is typically generalized to many joints, but it may affect some joints more than others. Previous trauma and/or overuse or favoring a specific side in repetitive activities are typically seen when looking back in time for joints more affected than others.
