My 8 year old daughter has a repaired artrial septal defect, she now has chicken pox as my husband and 6 year old son had it. does she need to be on an antibiotic? she has had it since friday 7 august and has had a high fever.

Monitor Symptoms: So most of the time with chicken pox it is a self limiting disease. Since it is viral rarely do you need antibiotics however if the vessicles and rash get infected this maybe a time when antibiotics are indicated, especially if your daughter has a history of ASD. I would honestly say keep an eye out for those rashes/pox marks and if they do get red, swollen with discharge consider seeing your PCP.

Not routinely: A repaired ASD would not place her at any increased need for antibiotics by itself. In rare instances the weeping sores of chickenpox can be invaded by skin germs & a superficial skin infection might occur. Keeping the sites clean & blotting the sites with hydrogen peroxide can often prevent any staph from invading them. If any site(s) develop a reddened margin, drainage or swell see her doc.
