My wife noticed a soft lump, ~1.5 inches, on my left upper back on my latissimus dorsi muscle. she felt it, cant see it, while rubbing back & made a remark thinking it was a muscle knot - but it doesnt feel tender or hurt. should i get it checked?

Sure: It could be a lipoma, a cyst or possibly a knot in the myofascia. If it isn't causing any problems - would have it examined at your next standard medical appointment (ie. annual medical check up).
