A member asked:

I've seen two doctors and one said i needed a microdiscectomy the other said i shouldn't have one and to have radio frequency ablation. what do i do? l4/l5 disc extrusion or herniated disc

A doctor has provided 1 answer

3rd opinion : The herniated disc should resolve in several weeks. What is important is if you only have pain or,if weakness or nerve dysfunction is present. If only pain, then the RFA makes sense, but if there are signs of neural, compression (weakness or nerve loss) then decompression is probably best, and microdiscectomy or other minimally invasive surgery causes the least OTHER damage and heals quickest.
