My husband tore a nail on his thumb into the flesh and this has made an infection. it is red and swollen with puss coming out. is there a way we can treat it without going in to the doctor's?

Thumb infection: You can wash it 3 times a day, drain all the pus and make sure nothing else gets into the wound. However, it can get worse and compromise all the extremity. The best thing to do is get it checked b a physician.

Wound care: When was his last tetanus shot. Although it can be soaked, I agree with earlier response that medical attention is the most prudent plan. Finger and hand infections can get out of control.
