Unsuccessful iv: The needle perforated the vein causing blood to collect under the skin. If this hematoma doesn't dissolve on its own after a week and hardens, warm compresses help it to dissolve. No permanent damage will occur. Uncommonly an injured vein will develop a nonserious superficial phlebitis which causes firmness and tenderness and is treated with warm compresses also.
