Antibiotics may help: If it is just diverticulitis, antibiotics with proper dietary modification may help. If the bleeding is very bad you may get better outcome with surgery. The most important treatment for diverticulitis would be appropriate antibiotics for long enough, however you have to learn the proper diet to reduce future possibilities of infection and inflammation as a matter of habit for your mother.
