Diverticulitis: Most of the time treatment is conservative, including antibiotics, pain control, IV hydration and bowel rest. Severe cases, with abscess formation or involving extended bowel, for example, require surgery as the risk for perforating bowel becomes significant.

Antibiotics may help: If it is just diverticulitis, antibiotics with proper dietary modification may help. If the bleeding is very bad you may get better outcome with surgery. The most important treatment for diverticulitis would be appropriate antibiotics for long enough, however you have to learn the proper diet to reduce future possibilities of infection and inflammation as a matter of habit for your mother.
