A member asked:

Good morning doctors. i was wondering...if you can be tested to determine if you have or don't have covid19, and it is known if you have it or don't have it, why can't that same knowledge be used in order to develop a treatment/vaccine?

COVID-19 research: Little knowledge is gained just from testing for current (PCR) or past infection (antibody) that is particularly helpful in development of treatments or vaccines. However, specialized tests to analyze the immune response and virus testing of persons who have and have not been infected are very much part of the scientific picture.

COVID 19: I agree with Dr. Handsfield. A great deal goes into development of vaccines and treatments - well beyond ability to determine if someone is currently infected or was previously infected with a particular virus. Scientists and laboratories are however, using all the information they can obtain to try to figure this out.
