Genital herpes: The usual herpes test these days is PCR, not culture. For either, some labs automatically determine virus type, but others need a request from the doctor or patient to test for HSV1 vs HSV2. It's not only possible to get herpes from someone who doesn't know they have it, this actually is the most common situation. If partner has an oral outbreak, it can be tested. Otherwise an HSV blood test.
