Respiratory disease: If you live in an area with poor air quality than it could only help. However, this will not prevent transmission of COVID 19.

Not particularly: Air purifiers may provide a level of protection to a minor degree. However. most respiratory disease is passed by chance exposure to droplets in social settings or from fingers contaminated by such germs. Video data has been scored & shown to reveal adults touch their nose/face/mouth ~6X/hr. Frequent hand washing or use of sanitizers require more effort but would help more.
