COVID 19: Masks/ face coverings really do more to protect other people from someone who is infected. Certain things can cause significant aerosolization of the virus. In laboratory conditions it has been found to be suspended in air for 3 hours. However, that is not in "real life" scenarios where it is likely to be significantly shorter.

COVID-19: A mask will reduce your risk of COVID-19 but it's not foolproof. The virus typically can travel up to 6 feet on moisture droplets in the air. It doesn't persist for very long one the infected person leaves.
