COVID 19: The SARS -CoV-2 virus only lives in the air for a brief time (some estimate 3 hours). I would wear a max even if you are ten feet away because a vigorous sneeze or cough can actually travel a good distance if the person isn't wearing a mask. In general there is more risk when in crowded, tight, poorly ventilated rooms - outdoors is considered safer.
