Knee pain: I assume there has been no recent injury. Prepatella tendonitis is the likely cause of the discomfort. If there's swelling in front of the knee cap, fluid collection in the bursa is likely. See your MD or orthopedic specialist for diagnosis and treatment. Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or naproxen, if you can take them, should help.

Injury vs infection: an "egg" at the front of your knee can indicate that you have a collection of fluid or inflamed tissue. Was there any trauma recently? injury to the area can cause swelling, pain and redness. Ice and rest will relieve this. If it is an infection, though, it will feel hot to the touch and will need medical treatment. See a Dr for low grade fever, and spreading of the red, inflamed area.
