A member asked:

Had small amount of bilirubin in concentrated urine sample. also protein (30 mg/dl); uro 1.0; sg 1.020. could the bilirubin be due to dehydration and fasting for over 16 hours? will concentrated urine increase bilirubin amount enough to appear?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bilirubin: Normal urine doesn't contain bilirubin. This finding may indicate liver disease and simple dehydration wouldn't cause it. Specific gravity of 1.020 isn't too concentrated. Your ordering physician will order further tests to include liver enzymes for a start. If elevated, hepatitis panel and liver ultrasound would be next. A microscopic exam of your urine and 24 hour total protein advised.
