A member asked:

My 91 year old mother, who is healthy, has no smell anymore.. is this a sign of something more serious, or just a part of her age?

Maybe both: Some loss of smell is very common in persons over age 80. Complete loss of smell can be a problem as it affects the way older people perceive food. Their eating may decline or intensify in response to their loss of smell. Complete loss can usually be attributed to frequent upper respiratory infections or medication side effects. Talk to your mother's DR and discuss having her seen by an ENT.
