A 22-year-old male asked:
i've had on off itching underneath my last 3 toes on my left foot. there does seem to be shedding of a layer of skin under those three. could it be the early stages of athletes foot? no rashes. could go a day with no itchiness sometimes.

Yes: This certainly sounds like athletes foot. Burning, itching and scaly skin along with redness are hallmarks of tinea pedis. Over the counter antifungal creams and sprays can help kill the yeast that cause these infections. To prevent future infections, try wearing open shoes (sandals or flip-flops) or go barefoot at home. Make sure to sanitize bathtub/shower floor to prevent recurrence.
