Many factors: Toddlers often become constipated due to diets with excess dairy and not enough water and fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole grains). A few cases of constipation are due to underlying illness, but most often it's diet related. Once the gut stretches with constipation it is a problem that tends to perpetuate. If diet changes alone don't help, your doctor might recommend medications.

Stool retention: Sadly infant brains don't grasp the value of soft regular stools but focus on pain avoidance.Whether diet/hydration/other issue triggers a hard poo, the kid may begin to retain/hold back to avoid discomfort of stooling, leading to large or hard stool that reinforces the cycle.Avoiding applesauce/bananas/cheese &pasta helps.Fruits &vegies help, softenersmay be needed.A stooling calander helps u follo.
