A member asked:

Can a high ebv vca igg and a negative <36 igm mean that i currently have mono/ebv or i am in the acute stage or only from having it in the past?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Past infection.: EBV VCA IgG & IgM are usually present at onset of clinical illness due to the long viral incubation time. IgM levels usually disappear within 3 months. They are a marker of acute infection in the appropriate clinical situation (other herpesviruses eg CMV can induce IgM antibodies). IgG VCA persist for life and are a marker of EBV infection. (+Igm VCA & negative IgG EBNA imply acute EBV infection
