Doctor can examine: Medicines such as Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, or Aleve are used to help ear infection, pains, and inflammation. Usually, ear pain that is bad, worrisome, not improving quickly, or that persists more than 2 days should be evaluated by one's primary care doctor (call first). The doctor generally needs to check the patient's head, neck, ears, nose, and throat to find out what is happening.

Additional advice: If you have been swimming and it hurts to pull your ear, it might be "swimmer's ear" an outer ear canal infection that should be treated with ear drops. If you have had a cold lately, maybe a fever, it could be a middle ear infection that might need antibiotic if it doesn't gradually improve with over the counter pain and fever relievers. Best to have a doctor look in, but call first!
