A member asked:

What causes pinguecula and how is it treated? whats the short, medium and long term treatment? is occupation (and computer work) a factor? or only age (degeneration)? is it temporary or permanent? any other important related information?

Pinguecula : Pingueculum is an area of degeneration in the conjunctiva, the outer covering of the eye, caused by the suns uv light.Usually located nasally. No treatment is usually indicated. Computer use is not a cause. Age not a factor. It is permanent and benign.Occasionally if it enlarges or if blood vessels occur(a pterygium) local surgery may be necessary.
