A member asked:

The lab my dr office uses is quest diagnostic. their wbc normal range is 3.8 to 10.8. my wbc was 4.5. it seems that other labs consider below 4.0 or 4.5 low. why do other labs use different standards for low wbc then quest? which is correct? thanks.

Depends: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, there are ethnic differences in WBC and the normal range varies. If you do not have symptoms do not worry about the numbers. Wish you good health!
