My baby is going to be a month on sunday. last night he was grunting and crying like he normally does when he passes stools but was only passing wind. he didn't get much sleep and even though he passed stools he doesn't seem his normal self?

Not unusual: Whether pushing out poop or gas an infant that age may fuss during the process. Their belly muscles are soft/flabby/weak are supplemented by fusing to push. I would not assume this means anything bad.
