Palps; any age: Palpitations, the sense of a fast, pounding, or irregular sensation in the chest, can be due to many cardiac and even noncardiac causes. The way to diagnose the cause of the palpitation sensation is with an event monitor, a device a person wears for up to 4 weeks. When a symptom is felt, the person pushes the button, which records the heart rhythm and heart rate at the time.
