A member asked:

Is there other options instead of the doctor's putting you to sleep for takeing a iud out?

Don't need sleep: In general, taking out an iud is an extremely quick, easy and painless procedure no more uncomfortable than a pap smear. It is done in the office without anesthesia and does not require one to be put to sleep at all. The only circumstance i can think of where this would be different is if the iud was completely lost in the uterus, and even then would not require general anesthesia.

Yes: It is not necessary to be put to sleep to have an iud taken out. Your doctor will grasp the strings from the iud which are in the vagina. As the iud comes through the cervix you may feel some discomfort and cramping for a moment. The only exception would be if your iud strings aren't visible and your doctor needs to search for the iud with a hysteroscope - then you may need to be put to sleep.

Yes there are.: I have never used anything to remove an iud other than a firm and decisive tug. There may be special circumstances with your particular case, the string being all the way inside the cervix and not visable for instance. You might discuss using a local (like the dentist uses) if required.
