A member asked:

Had preliminary blood tests for esophageal cancer; for what indicators are we looking in the blood work?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Likely baselines: If you have yet to begin treatment then likely these were preliminary labs to make monitoring effects of chemotherapy possible and to make sure that it is safe to give chemotherapy or determine need for supportive meds with chemotherapy. Most esophageal cancer is treated with a combination of chemotherapy, radiation , and surgery. The sequence can vary based on other factors, often surgery last.
