Possibilities: A look inside may give you an idea why this is happening. The tissues of the mouth & throat may be filled with blisters or other evidence of germs. The gum lines may be inflamed. The teeth or bones of the jaw may hurt. At least the kid can answer questions at that age, so ask. Sucking on ice chips often numbs any sores as will liquid benedryl.

View inside mouth: A photo may be uploaded during a virtual consultation with Healthtap. He may have lesions in his mouth and localized antacid liquid mixed with children's benadryl in equal portions dabbed onto the lesions may help. Please see your PCP, and in the meantime keep your son well hydrated with neutral non acidic liquids, including milk, water and pedialyte.
