A deep breath: Before a blood pressure reading, one can take a slow deep breath or two, relax a moment, and imagine a calm and pleasant scene (such as sitting on the warm sand at the beach, watching the waves, listening to the birds). If that doesn't work, one's primary care doctor can evaluate and refer to psychiatry if needed, to treat the cause of the high blood pressure reading (if anxiety is the cause).
