my 56 year old son, who lives alone, has experienced an act of violent behavior while sleeping and does not remember anything about it. he is diabetic, has had a kidney transplant, is losing his sight, and had bad gout at the time of the act.

Violent behavior: I am not quite sure what you mean by violent behavior. Was this acted on him by another or did he injure himself while sleeping? If the latter then a seizure would be a real possibility to explain the problem.
