A member asked:

My daughter got bitten by a pet rat. she had rabies injections 2 years ago. does she need medical treatment?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maybe: A pet rat not exposed to outside animals is not a rabies threat. The wound produced could become infected with mouth germs common to the pet. A good wash out with soap & water can reduce the risk & her tetanus should be up to date. Any sign of increasing redness or drainage from the site should lead to a visit. If the bite was on the web of the thumb/forefinger I would get it examined.
