Contaminated vs. not: The first question a person must answer is whether or not a needle is contaminated (not merely hypothetical contamination, or merely a fear of contamination). If a needle is truly contaminated, such as it jabbed a housemate who is a known HIV patient, then that needle can sometimes transmit HIV. Because usually only one patient uses one needle, there is generally no way to contaminate the needle.
